How to connect with Your LGBTQ Community

Struggling to embrace who you are? Learn to move forward with advice from the people who’ve been in your shoes. Coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community takes commendable courage in today’s world, which is still pretty backwards regardless of increasing global acceptance and awareness. The hardest part of it all is finding people you can communicate and connect with around your local community. Thankfully, you’re surrounded by more LGBTQ community members than you probably realize – and here’s how you can start connecting with them today.

Social Media

Your new best friend could be right next door, but you’ll never know unless you knock. Use social media to connect with others on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Reddit. These windows into the LGBTQ world give you a safe space to make your voice heard and meet like minded people.

School Groups

There are various student-run clubs around that support LGBTQ community members while educating people on tolerance. For example, the Genders & Sexualities Alliance Network connects Queer allies across both high and middle schools, helping them grow as the leaders of the next generation while embracing campus pride.

Mentoring Programs

Giving back to the community is one of the best ways to get involved in it. Most of the best colleges offer well-established peer-to-peer mentoring programs, which could give you the opportunity to open up, ask questions, and make new allies in your new world.

LGBTQ Community Centers

The first LGBTQ community centers opened their doors across LA and Albany in the early ‘70s.

Today, the global community has exploded with hundreds of centers across Mexico, Canada, China, Australia, Cameroon, and everywhere in-between. Chances are, there’s a community center closer to you than you may have thought, ready to arm you with resources on your community and a safe space to ask questions and organize social groups.

Online Therapy

Sometimes, a few kind words of advice from the perfect stranger can make the world of difference. Through professional online therapy, you can learn to accept who you are and gain the confidence you need to take the first step and get involved in your local LGBTQ community.

We’re lucky to live in the world we do today, where more and more people are becoming aware and accepting of the growing global LGBTQ community. Learn more about our online therapy sessions from licensed counselors and passionate LGBTQ advocates today.
